I have successfully resisted Starbucks delicious looking gingerbread all season so I went on a mission to find a health conscious version that was also scrumptious for Christmas. 
Here's the recipe:
Batter
1¾ cups all-purpose flour
¾ cup whole wheat flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
½ teaspoon baking soda
¼ teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground ginger
¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 cup buttermilk, chilled (I used regular)
¾ cup firmly packed dark brown sugar
½ cup light or dark molasses
¼ cup vegetable oil
3 tablespoons commercial applesauce (I omitted
2 large eggs
 Icing
1.5 cups powdered sugar
dash of orange extract
enough milk to get the right consistency

Decorate with candied ginger and it will look like this...
